Kurogane knew Fai was angry with him – furious, even. He had been prepared for it. He thought he could sit passively beside Fai’s bed and take any abuse Fai hurled at him. He had reviewed everything that he had done, most of which he knew Fai would hate, but he couldn’t say he regretted it - no matter how much it might cause he blond magician to rage.
He prepared for shouting, screaming, insults and having his name butchered six ways to Sunday. He’d even prepared for tears, though he admitted privately it was very unlikely that Fai would cry, especially in front of him.
His preparations were wasted. He had not been ready for the reality, the silence and dead eyes. He hadn’t known being called by his name could wound him that deeply. It hurt even more because he wanted Fai to say his name, just… not like that.
Hours later, Kurogane found himself on the way back to Fai’s room, determined to shake some sense into that damn magician. There was no way he was just going to accept this as the end.
The faint creak of floorboards caught his attention. Kurogane looked up, and saw Fai walking towards him. He stopped, waited. Kurogane had wanted to do this in private, but if this was his opportunity he wasn’t going to ignore it.
Kurogane opened his mouth to speak as they drew even, and Fai just kept walking.
